Emerging Out Of Cricket's Shadow .

Having performed impressively at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the Asian Games at Guangzhou, Indian sportsmen have perhaps created the perfect platform for other sports to breach the cricket barrier.

......India has come a long way since 1900 when Norman Pritchard, a British descendant did his adopted country proud by winning two silver medals in 200m and 200m hurdles respectively and till date remains the only ‘Indian’ to win two Olympic medals.A century hence, in 2008, Abhinav Bindra made history by becoming the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. Dare I say, his achievement ignited the spark of confidence other athletes solemnly needed. India won more than a hundred medals at CWG this year, 38 of which were gold, a record haul for India. At the Asian Games ’10, India managed a staggering 64 medals, another record. The overall performance of India at the events resulted in an all-time best of second and sixth spots respectively...............

India 2001-2010 resurrection Bihar: Freedom from fear .

Central Bihar, once a theatre of bitter caste conflict, has given way to an oasis of peace as the forces that fought for supremacy have been tamed by changing social equations .

.......We are asked to get down. Our car is thoroughly searched. Our photographer, clearly insulted by the action of what he insists a “lowly officer”, grumbles. “You are passing from Kurtha and coming from Senari; we need to search,” assures Sub-Inspector Sanjeev Bhushan. Then, almost as an afterthought, he adds, “You people are roaming freely with such costly equipment and have not been mugged or chopped off yet in these region. I think you need to give credit to us.” We leave with my friend nursing his little ego...........................

Business is Marketing.

HEAL THE WORLD, MAKE IT A BETTER PLACE!

When a brand associates itself with a cause, it changes the total image and reputation of the company. Research has proved that firms that are socially responsible are considered by consumers to have a good reputation. In a study done by British Telecom in 2002, as much as 25% of a company’s reputation was dependant on its commitment to society...................,.

 SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE ADVERTISING.

Advertising is a potent tool and needs to be used very carefully. Cadbury too tread on the danger line when the ad for its ‘Bliss’ range of dark chocolates ran into slight trouble this year. The chocolate bars were promoted with a strapline, “Move over Naomi, there is a new diva in town”. The black model Naomi Campbell did not take it too well and said she found it insulting, hurtful and racist. The ads were pulled out and Cadbury had to apologize to Naomi.....................,

SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE EMPLOYEES.

Be good, be responsible. That is what will help you sustain in this highly competitive world. Let’s make a commitment to not just make profits but in our own way heal the world, make it a better place.............,

The Fascinating World of Marketing

STRATEGY FORMULATION AND EXECUTION WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF CONSUMER INSIGHTS IS AS SENSIBLE AS RUNNING ON A MINEFIELD BLINDFOLDED.

A third company wanted to find out which flavour should it choose to lace its new introduction of glucose powder with – grape, pineapple, orange, or mango. This despite the common knowledge that in India the most acceptable flavours are mango and orange. Real was also introduced the western way – unsweetened. But research made Dabur realise that market preferred it sweet. Yet when Tropicana arrived in India it came in with sugarless juices...............

RESEARCH PROVIDES A DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM.

It was discovered that the basic reason to use the repellant was to enjoy peaceful sleep. Knowledge about electronic repellents was virtually missing, and those who knew disapproved of their high price and fluctuating quality. Families with children were frequent users of coils and creams, and they were reasonably satisfied. While users of mats disliked cream due to its perceived harmful effect on skin, cream users avoided mats since they emitted harmful gases. Pricewise, at Rs.5-10 both were affordable, easily available too. Briefly put no major dissatisfaction...............

CONCLUSION BEFORE THE HYPOTHESIS?

One of the top three multinational nonformal shoe marketer came to India, salivating over teeming millions as potential buyers. Logic deployed was simplistic, albeit daft: Everyone who could buy a Maruti was capable of buying the shoe brand. Logic so far was uncontestable. But how can you forget the simple lesson of Economics 101: What ‘could’ be purchased is not necessarily what ‘would’ be purchased. Need plus ability plus motivation plus opportunity combined together generate demand for a product................

RESEARCH HELPS FINE-TUNE POST LAUNCH STRATEGY.

The company introduced a gel tube whereby the shaver puts gel drop on a brush and works up the lather. Cadbury found that with a positioning of Cadbury as a gift to a child on special occasions, and with 70% marketshare, the sales were stagnant. The parent would be the buyer but never consumer. The company repositioned the bar:.......

RESEARCH, HOWEVER, CAN’T SUBSTITUTE FOR INTUITION.

All over the world, Lifebuoy was sold on the body odour platform. Unilever (now HUL) wanted to deploy the same positioning here too. Lintas, their agency, did a dipstick and found that in India body odour was not perceived to be a problem. Lever pointed out that it was not perceived to be a problem in West either – until Lifebuoy campaign made people conscious about it. Lintas, unconvinced, pointed out that in West people lived in close spaces, not necessarily bathing everyday.,,................

IIPM Mumbai Campus..

No Problem: Laugh you will, but only sporadically...........

Anees Bazmee had clearly announced with “Singh Is Kinng” (SIK) No Problemand “Welcome” that the brain is an optional (and possibly irritating) faculty for enjoying his light comic fare on the silver screen. “No Problem” turns out to be a watered down version of “Singh Is Kinng” – the same illogical jumps from one exotic location to another and a similar brand of silliness. But while SIK was slick and “Welcome” had some hilarious performances from Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar, “No Problem” has most of its problems in the performance department............................

Assertion amid restrictions

The local media in Kashmir is expanding at a staggering pace though the sailing has not been smooth for local journalists and media organisations.

Till the late 1980s, J&K had such less newspapers and magazines that they could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Of these, only Aftab and Srinagar Times, both Urdu dailies, were popular among the masses. When insurgency erupted in the Valley, people needed their daily fix of news. They were eager to remain abreast of developments around them............

.........The growing literacy rate, which at present hovers a little above 65 per cent in J&K, has also widened the readership base during the last two decades. At the same time, new technologies like the Internet, networked computers and other hardware and software applications have also helped in producing newspapers in large number with better print quality. Apart from that, more than 20 cable news channels have been launched across the state in the past few years. All of the news channels — more than a dozen — are off the air in the Valley though after the state authorities announced a temporary ban on them four months ago.....................
